Charlotte Mason Homeschooling: Charlotte Mason was a 19th century educator who believed “the souls of all children are waiting for the call of knowledge to awaken them to delightful living.” Some of the characteristics of a Charlotte Mason education are using living books, keeping a nature journal, and introducing music, art, poetry, and great literature among other resources. Recommended by former MTW missionary and professional educator, Lorrie Deringer.
Sonlight**: Sonlight pioneered literature-rich homeschooling more than 25 years ago. Back then, no company scheduled real books into a complete course of study. But when Sarita Holzmann started to homeschool her children, she did just that: scheduled books she loved, and read them to her children. She enjoyed it so much, she wanted to allow other families to experience the same benefits that she did, so she started Sonlight. If you had a traditional education though, you probably learned from reading textbooks, filling in worksheets, and listening to lectures. It's not necessarily a bad way to learn. It's fairly efficient, and you can easily tell when you're finished. That has a certain appeal. Closure! Less time spent doing school! And both minimal time on school work, and a sharp divide between school and life make sense when school is something to avoid, something to grind through as quickly as possible to get on with the rest of life, the more appealing parts.
The Potter's School: TPS promotes excellence in discipleship and scholarship as an integrated grace-based process. With regard to scholarship, since God is Truth, all academic pursuit is study of God and the outworking of His Logos. With regard to discipleship, teaching and parenting are related roles that influence a student’s whole “heart” (intellect, emotion, will). With regard to excellence, the grace of the cross makes continual pursuit of God’s glory in all our endeavors a joyful realization of who we already are in Christ, not a frustrating effort to gain merit from man or God. TPS was originally called The Potter’s School, based on Isaiah 64:8.
